My name is Dr. Kari Groff, and I am an adult and child psychiatrist practicing in NYC. I have a genuine passion for connecting people and creating authentic, meaningful communities. In 2015, I founded the Brooklyn and Beyond Mental Health Group (BBMHG) to help therapists step out of the isolation that often comes with private practice and to foster connections among us. It started with local Brooklyn therapists but quickly became a central listserv for NYC and the tristate area. Our listserv reaches over 3,600 people daily, and members are added based on the recommendations of current members. BBMHG is an apolitical space that promotes compassionate and thoughtful communication and professional leadership within the therapist and medical community.
I have a private practice in New York City where I see both children and adults for medication management and therapy. I graduated from the psychiatry training program at the University of Pennsylvania in 2007, where I had the privilege of serving as chief resident. I then completed my fellowship at the NYU Child Study Center and Bellevue Hospital in 2009. I am grateful to the many mentors I met at both Penn and NYU who inspired me to create this community. Some academic achievements include membership in Alpha Omega Alpha, the highest honor society in medicine, and recognition by the Gold Humanism in Medicine Society for exemplary compassionate care. But the greatest honor has been creating this community.
My passions extend beyond my clinical work in psychiatry; I love connecting people, teaching different topics in psychiatry, and hosting community events. I teach various professional development classes for my BBMHG colleagues and serve as volunteer faculty at SUNY-Downstate, teaching fellows about complex clinical situations. I deeply enjoy sharing insights and collaboration.
You can often find me playing fiddle on the weekends or running networking events with my Upper West Side Psychotherapy Alliance colleague, Ari Fox, LCSW. Ari's listserv is also one of the most comprehensive NYC area listservs that is free to join. He and I have a combined newsletter which reaches thousands of our members. I am also grateful for the volunteer efforts of my close colleague, Dr. Mandi White-Ajmani of Small Brooklyn Psychology, who generously supports BBMHG. Together, we are dedicated to building a supportive community for mental health professionals and those we serve.
We believe every BBMHG member should have a high-quality and affordable headshot. Work with a photographer who understands the world of a therapist. BBMHG is happy to promote affordable headshot photography by Kari's partner, Michael Goran Veljic Goran is extremely sensitive to the therapist's needs regarding finding the right headshot that portrays compassion, confidence, and calmness. You can attend one of our popular Networking Photography events or schedule a private session. You can email him at gveljic@gmail.com or contact him on his website www.goranv.com
BBMHG is a free, unmoderated listserv for members to share resources, information, and services. We are here to help each other and the people we serve in our practices. It is not a place for political discussions or debate, as there are many other forums for those types of interactions.
If you are a member of BBMHG, you can email the group at BBMHG@googlegroups.com
Please do not include any identifying client information in your posts, but be specific in what you are looking for in the subject line. For example: Seeking in-network Aetna therapist for in-person therapy in Manhattan for a client, mid 30s. Posts should be relevant to the mental health field. Please delete your lengthy signatures to make the Daily Digest user-friendly. Please make your ISO (in search of) subject lines specific especially in terms of insurance and location needs.
BBMHG is all about sharing your business adventures, group classes, and practice announcements. The group is very mindful of the readers' experiences and has asked that people avoid over-promoting a class or activity. Please try to personalize your advertising efforts and minimize them to once a month to maintain reader engagement.
Please feel free to reach out to each other to make new connections, but do not use the emails from BBMHG to generate your own private email list without the direct consent of the member.
Please do not use BBMHG to create new listservs. It has taken many years to build and create this group. The best listservs are built from the ground up and are not based on the labor of others.
NYC and the tri-state area have tremendous talent in terms of therapists, psychologists, physicians, and allied professionals. Please keep your communications with each other respectful and extremely professional. Our goal is to build a great community.
BBMHG is dedicated to protecting patient confidentiality. When seeking a referral, BBMHG members should only provide minimal information. This is really the most important rule of all.
You can choose to receive each email as it comes in real-time. Some people prefer this if they are trying to build a practice and want to respond quickly to referrals. Others opt for the Daily Digest, which is a single email that summarizes all the most recent postings. By default, people are added to the Daily Digest, but you can change your membership settings on the Google Groups home page under "My Membership Settings" and then under "Subscription".
BBMHG has the conversations and posts saved on the Google Groups homepage. You can search the listserv for topics that might have already been shared to the group. Certain members of BBMHG have been very helpful in sharing very good resources and you can search conversations by subject or topic.
Please only "respond to all" when your answer applies to the entire group or you feel that the group would benefit from knowing it. For referrals, please respond directly to the clinician. It is helpful to include all of your information, including fees, availability, and experience, when responding to a referral request.
Try to spend time each day seeing if you answer a question someone posted. If you have a question for the group, please feel free to ask. You can email the group at BBMHG@googlegroups.com Please always remember to exclude confidential information and please do not put down the work, efforts, or opinion of a colleague. BBMHG is about respectful communication only.
Please feel free to use our contact page or email me at kgroffmd@gmail.com or Dr. White-Ajmani mandi@smallbrooklyn.com to introduce us to your colleague.
An off-shoot of BBMHG is IMHCC, which is a national and international listserv committed to helping clinicians connect their clients with new mental health providers in different states or countries. We have members from every continent. Members from outside of the NYC area are welcome to join this listserv. I strongly encourage current BBMHG members to recommend colleagues from other states and countries to IMHCC.
On behalf of BBMHG, I donate to the Native American Legal Rights fund each month to help support its mission of providing legal representation to different Native American populations regarding important issues. Please visit their website to better understand their mission.
